PPI... what to ask

I'm looking at getting a PPI done for a 1984 Carrera, the garage has asked what I'd like included in the inspection...

I'm new to the game so would appreciate some suggestions

Thanks

I'd have them do a compression test and maybe a leak down. Check for any collision damage or rust. Check transmission, electrical and overall integrity of the car. Good luck, Tim

Is the shop conducting the PPI an air cooled Porsche shop or more of a general services shop?

Timchar nailed it, if you are not local ask for photos of any collision or rust issues or repairs. If the car is claimed to be original paint, you want paint gauge/thickness readings from the whole car, especially areas more prone to rust...striker panels, low on the doors, and fenders.....

The real trick is choosing the right shop.

Consider paying for the valve covers to be removed and head studs inspected. These cars break head studs and fixing is $$$$.

Other than that leakdown is important.

You should be able to do all the electrical tests yourself- no need to pay someone to check lights windows mirrors etc

+1 Compression and Leak Down Test, at a minimum.

How many miles?

Thanks for al the good advice guys, unfortunately I am 100 miles away (more like 10000 actually) and I'm a bit limited as to who can do the PPI for me.

I guess they're more general than specific to Porsche but they do sell aircooled Porsches so I'm confident they'll have the knowledge

Thanks again guys

ps I think the mileage is around 80000 miles

We use a general form for the base PPI and add to it per request. Leakdown test is extra as that is time consuming.

Google around for a massive PPI checklist.
Send it to them,

I'd start with "can anyone recommend a shop to do a PPI in Nowheresville?"

I'm in NY and bought a car in Florida. Did the exact same thing and the forum members came through (no surprise).

I did a thread asking for recommendations, 2 were recommended, one shop doesn't do PPIs and the one does... so that was my decision made 😊
