I believe on May 12 the NIO EP9, electric powered, broke the lap record with 6:45.90

The really impressive thing is the 918 Spyder took a positively lethargic 6:57 according to an official Porsche press release.

Cars have been around for over 100 years and progress is STILL being made so fast that Porsche supersedes their own hypercar in just 4 years.

The Carrera GT putted around in a lowly 7:29, and the famous RUF yellowbird video was over 8 minutes to complete a lap. (8:05)

Perhaps so, however: That’s the new record for production cars, and it was achieved with drive only going to the rear wheels. More amazing still is that Porsche didn’t just shave a few milliseconds off the previous record. It absolutely smashed it.

According to Road & Track: To date, NIO has built seven EP9s, so we're not sure it can be considered a "production car." NIO itself doesn't say the EP9's time is a production-car lap record, for what it's worth.

I watched the entire video this morning. That driver has brass balls!!!

I wonder really, how much is that JUST driver skill? Seemed the driver really pushed it hard.

That's kinda the thing about the course - it's narrow so there's not a lot of line selection. It's also bumpy and unforgiving which means you need very good, stable chassis setup that gives a driver confidence so they can push that hard.

And yes, of course, the drivers have to be pretty amazing PLUS be absolute experts of every nuance of every turn. But all of the guys who do these factory backed runs are just that good. Note that the GT2RS did it with two drivers and with two different cars just to prove it wasn't a fluke lap, either.

Did anyone notice the driver had no gloves? Race helmet and nomex suit, no doubt racing shoes as well, but bare hands?? I've never seen a professional driver in a situation like that wearing full race gear but no gloves.

Here is my conspiracy theory

Porsche is such a leader in on board software and systems (I still don’t understand how their new cars know when I want to shift)..:

What are the odds that the driver is just along for the ride on a perfectly programmed lap??

Totally amazed. I watched it on my phone night, so not the largest screen, and thought he was bare handed but figured they were tan colored.

My hands get sweaty on my spirited drives! Crazy!!!
