Installing new Stereo, need help through the firewall...

Hey guys, I am putting a stereo in the 930 this weekend and was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on how to run wires through the firewall? I want to mount my amps up front and am wondering what is the best way to do this.

Any pics would be greatly appreciated as well.

what firewall? The dash is pretty wide open once you are in it!

If you go in the drivers side floor board...just above the clutch you can pop a hole and run through it...this will come out just next to the smugglers box lid in the trunk.

Look directly behined the stereo opening in the dash and you will see a hole in the firewall covered with a grommet with OEM wires feeding through. When I wired my stereo I fed power from the battery to the amp (located under drivers seat) through this hole. If you are looking to pass RCA cables through, it may be a little tough. You may be able to pass one RCA jack at a time.

To get to this hole/grommet, you'll need to remove the cardboard covering the misc hoses, etc from within the trunk and fish down from the passengers side of the trunk until you see it....it will be a tight fit. But if you can get the wires to pass, it will be a very clean installation as the stereo will be right there once you pass the wires.

Take a look at www.caraudioinnovations.com for some ideas. Rod had wired plenty of 911's and other make Porsche's and had very good documentation, including pictures on his site.

If you have air conditioning another route is through the cut out (passenger floor well) for air flow from the air conditioner evaporator in the smuggler's box. This hole is usually large and permits the ready passage of wiring harness connectors. Jim

I drilled a 1" hole in through the wall after removing the passenger side footwell blower cover. They sell 1" rubber grommets to finish the hole and make it look professionally done. After replacing the blower cover, everything is hidden also. It will enter the trunk right behind the smugglers box under the cardboard blower cover. The size of the RCA preamps made it impossble to fit these through the existing exit points.

I don't know if the later cars have this or not, but my '82 has an un-used "pipe" on the passenger side behind the right dash vent. It's about 1 inch in diameter and passes from the passenger compartment to the front trunk. I used it for all my stereo cables. There is one just like it on the driver's side that is used for the A/C feed to that side vent.

Could you shed some light on how you are installing the amps up front. I have a Sony amp I'd like to put up there but still need to be able to use the trunk without causing it to overheat. Mine seems too wide to mount on the fiberboard cover that's in front of all the hoses and wires.

Buck, I am not exactly sure how I am going to do it yet. I am actually planning on spending the entire day tomorrow installing the stereo so I'll let you know what I come up with.

If you are installing an amp mount it under the passenger seat then there wont be as many wires youll just have your mainpower[fuseable]wire to go to the battery. Hope that helps.

If your amp is not that big, and you want it COMPLETELY hidden, a good spot is under the passenger side wooden foot rest/floor board. I had one (25wx2) mounted in that location on my first 911 which I had for 3 years, and no problems (moisture, overheating, etc.). That spot is also convenient for wiring, as it's close to both the head unit and firewall grommet(s). You don't have to pull up any carpet, or "fish" wires through seat rails either.
