C.A smog test info
I just had my 84 Carrera fail and then pass the smog test. My motor is bone stock with 168,000 miles and the addition of a SW chip and a sport muffler. Right off the street with a couple of gallons of lousy gas I failed the HC test by two points. With ten gallons of Chevron and a bottle of octane boost, some fuel injector cleaner and a Italian tuneup I passed easily. Here are the numbers.

If it did not pass this time I was going to head over to HRP and get a gallon or so of Methanol., burns clean.

So was the 1st test that failed with only local driving from home to the test station?
I found several yrs ago when my '84 was failing, a good and hot engine after the Italian tune up helped the HC considerably but not enough to pass. I had to get a new cat to finally pass the HC. Glad it worked out for you! CA smog every 2 yrs is a major pia....

Both tests were after forty-five minutes of spirited driving to warm the car up. I believe the difference was the gas quality.

Thanks for posting this. this is helpful info. I never cease to be amazed how the best state in the union for auto enthusiasts has become so unfriendly to us.

Thank you for posting this! I have a 1984 Carrera that failed the smog test twice. I'm going to
put a new O2 sensor in and have my fingers crossed ! |

My 84 passes sans cat with flying colors. One time I forgot to re-connect the brown jumper wire & it failed... Reconnect for the test! Then disconnect for 2 years of joyful driving!

take it down to 3-4 gallons, put in a gallon of methanol,
and you'll pass every time. Right after test, fill tank to dilute.
