speedometer doesn't work after trans rebuild

The subject line says it all. Prior to rebuilding my engine and having my 915 rebuilt, my speedometer worked just fine, thanks. The trans rebuild is beautiful - shifts great! But my speedometer no longer works. I bought a new speedo sensor and installed that this weekend. Still doesn't work.

I've contacted the rebuilder but haven't heard from him yet... not worried about that yet, but what am I in for technically here? I know there are magnets in there... what could be wrong? Can the differential just be removed by itself? My Bentley manual doesn't say anything about how to do that. How involved is that job?

As long as the engine doesn't have to come out again, man, then I'm emotionally prepared to deal with this issue.

Cheers,

As long as the diff. didn't get removed, the magnets that run the speedo sensor wouldn't have been effected. Have you checked the connection in the tunnel? Perhaps something got disconnected when the engine+tranny was removed.

Are you sure you set the new speedo sensor correctly?

I don't know if the diff got moved during the rebuild. I'm sure he checked it out, whatever that involves in the way of removing it or not.

I'm open to a simpler solution, believe me. I just don't see how anything in the tunnel could've gotten messed with. The speedo sensor cable and the trans control arm are the only things that stick in there from the engine bay, and I definitely recall detaching and re-attaching them correctly.

As far as putting the sensor on, I've looked carefully at it, played around with it, but there's really only one position the thing can be in. It's not a complicated thing. That said, it was I who put the original back on the trans before reinstalling the engine & trans. And then I put the new one on this weekend as well. Weird.

My question is the same as Eric's. The sensor that lays against the tranny has a pretty side and an ugly side. Surprizingly, the ugly side goes out. The smooth, pretty side goes against the tranny case.

Oh boy. Ok. So there IS some variation as to how to place the thing. Pretty side down! Now I feel like a dimwit. Ah well, that's what this board is for. Thanks y'all, esp Superman. I'll try it tonight, but I bet this is going to work.

Cheers,
