So I'm manually rotating the engine while setting the cam timing and hear this "tink" noise... SOunded to me (and Souk) almost like a bolt letting go, but also the sound of something just lightly tapping one of the cylinder fins...
We checked all the bolts and found no issues, but is there something I missed? Valves and the 1 & 4 intake rockers are intact... I'M FREEKIN OUT MAN!

A ring letting go? You mean like one breaking? Would it sound so obvious?

tryan, can a ring that was caught create a loud enough "tink", through the cyclinder wall? Chris and I probably spent close to a hour looking for anything that might have poped off or come loose. It was scary.
Everything rotated fine, no unusual drag on the crank. I thought maybe a ring snapped (cracked), but then Chris didn't think it would create such a noise on the outside. |

Ron, that was the first thought we had, but it wasn't very loud. Chris has 993 studs that are suppose to be the best these days, and we checked them all after the incident. It sounded like a small bolt/stud snapping under compression, but we checked all the heads/bolts. Chris may be in the garage hunting for something right now.

ROn... Might have been...
I'm not gonna worry about it at this point, went over it with a fine tooth comb and found nothing... I think it was one of the above, but I doubt it was something internal, as it sounded to clear, and not muffled like a ring might. Head stud was my first thought, but I checked them all...

Did you do any work on the valve springs? Is everything correct with the timing chain system? Jim

Valve springs are new. All intact and not cracked that I can see... I found some metal shavings that I though "OH NO, THE SPROCKET IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT!" but checked that and it's fine. Turns out that the cam sprocket holding tool was too tight and was loosing little shavings as I tapped it on... Cleaned it, removed the whole cam box , gears, etc and cleaned them all good. No bits anywhere now.. No noises either. Motor turns good.
Still no source of "ting" just moving ahead...

Chirs you mentioned in a previous correspondence about ow hard it should be to turn an engine over by hand..
Well I never have measured the torque manually, remember though the engine is as new is it will ever be. I would be worried if the engine were easy to turn over, or if it didnt turn over evenly..

Tim,
Well it's not "easy", seems a bit harder to turn over than a broken in motor from what I remember. You can definitely feel the difference in the effort required when a valve starts getting compressed by the cam. I think it's fine... Just worrying about nothing as usual... ![]()

If you replaced the springs then one could have been slightly unseated and then snapped into place when it was more fully compressed as you turned the engine over. Hope all goes well. Jim

I agree with Jim. Sounds like something settled.

Funny that you would say that Jim, because that's what I had been thinking... (But "settling" sounded too easy top me at the time). It really did sound like the exact tone a bit of metal bouncing off a head fin makes. We were able to replicate it by lightly tapping a wrench on one of the fins...
Though I could not find the cause, I'm not going to tear down the engine...
