Doors Lock Issues - While I'm in there

Okay so both my door locks have stopped working. The key won't turn, and the lock pin itself doesn't want to go up or down. From lurking and searching, I'm going to go through the procedures described in these threads to disassemble the door and reposition the circlip, clean and lubricate the mechanism.

NEED HELP big time! door lock.

door lock

What else should I do/replace while I'm in there? Any tips and tricks or sage advice?

Thanks!

I have had a 87 cab for about 15 years, and things I've had fix in the doors are:
Window glass fell out of the u channel at the bottom of the mechanism, simply got some good epoxy suitable for glass and fixed that. The RH side electric motor failed, replaced that. You might wont to think about upgrading stereo speakers if you enjoy music.

Keep searching the forums for key words involving the doors and you are bound to come up with things too keep you busy on weekends. Maybe Wayne's 101 project book has some ideas.

One or both of the spring stoppers might be broken. De lube and lube rails. The felt where the window and door meet. The felt around the window.
I’ve been in there so many times I should have engraved my initials in there.

Do you have a spare key, the key teeth may be worn out. If inserting the key and it does not turn tells me the tumbler is not releasing and not allowing you to rotate the cylinder to unlock the locking mechanism arm.

Oh boy, it is filthy in there, sowwy :-(

While you are in the car with doors closed ( must close the door ) does the pin go up and down or the via the dial on the door?

The springs help the windows go up not down. I had the same problem as you. Going to the track I could not roll my windows down and was ready to smash the drivers side. (Driver’s side must be down to go on the track) After hours of greasing rails and just general f###ing around I came to the conclusion it was the felt inserts below the window that were the problem. With the windows up for most of the 32 years they become dry and swollen. They look great where you can see them, but not below. This gives the window resistance when first trying to roll them down.

Thanks everyone.

@Draco The door locks will not actuate with the dial or the key.

Looks like my to do list is to order the reinforcements, spring stops, and inspect the condition of the felt inserts. Anything else I should be ordering in preparation for this project?

Ditto :-)

Give yourself plenty of time, it is tidious work and do not over torque the handles you will squash the trim rubbers. Ask me How I know.

Go to a FLAPS and get yourself a mini 1/4" ratchet, you will need it and a 8MM socket to remove the rear nut for the handle.

When you pull the handle, take a close look at the actuator wire, my first service of the actuator, my wire was severed causing the actuator not to work, spliced back together and all was good in the world :-)

If the actuator tabs snap off due to age, do not worry get some extra thin zip ties and zip tie them. Place it in between the slot where you can see the spring of the handle plunger and place the buckle downward so it can fit back in the hole. You will know what I mean when you place it back in. Test before putting back in. trick the door sensor by manually latching the door while open. Then the actuator if working will lock and unlock.

Oh yeah, take this time to clean and lube the plunger mechanism, lube the door release spring and lever.

When you put everything back make sure wires are not in the path of moving parts.

Break a Leg Brother!

Install a power door lock system...(you don't have to do any of the mod in the doors though). It is a pretty easy mod.

I had the same issue: Before looking for anything other, verify if this screw is simply loosen

In this case the loosen lock pawl can't actuate while turning the key

Yes, you can use a phillips and remove the screw which will release the tumbler cylinder. Do it over a table in case the cylinder drops out. Note the orientation of the lever, it must go back the same way.

With the key in, it will rotate forward and aft.

Mine are in need of some maintenance too.

Before you tear into it too much, give it a really good clean and lube first. It would be nice if this works. An easy first try.

Put a touch of the lube in several places on the teeth of the big gear thing. When I did that my window came back to life as to speed.
