Whats The Secret in Removing Dash Switch Knobs?

I am going to replace a few switches this spring (headlight, AC and fog light) and never quite understood the proper method for removing the dash knobs (the big rubber guys with the symbol in the center). Are they pressed on? screwed on? Glued on? I want to be able to re-use them, but also I want to make sure I do not bend or mess up any of the switches themselves in trying to get them off.

Their must be a ton of experience out there in Pelican land that I would hope you would share on this one.

Thanks
Bob

Bob:

I did this 2 summers ago on my '73.
The large rubber pieces cover a conical (w/ a fat head) plastic/ bakalite knob. They were a real #$@% to get off after 29 years.

I believe each one screws on (it's been a while). I know the defroster switch does as the entire center rod comes out when you do.

Once off though, the plastic piece in the center sits in a double lip just under the top. You should be able to gently push them though by pressing on one end and slowly pushing the center piece above the rubber. That said, I used a very generous amount of Armor all cleaner to lubricate the hell out of them.

I spend about 4 days in front of the TV (no garage :-( with Armor-All cleaner and an old toothbrush to get all the gunk and muck off as well as condition teh knobs. I also rubbed in a fair amout or AA protectant after they we clean.

The overall result was terrific. Very clean with a few aged wrinkle which now lend an air of age and authenticity. I did have to replace 2 which were still pretty bad even after all the cleaning and moisturizing. I got these while in Duesseldorf from a dealer.

Hope this helps...

(If you like, I can post a few pics next week after I get the car back from storage.)

Thanks Oliver.
I guess I needed to know that the main part that holds that big rubber cover screws off the stem. I would hate to ruin a cover by prying.............

I did purchse a few new rubber covers, fairly cheap through another major parts supplier. The new rubber compared to the older stuff is fantastic!

Pictures would be great.

Regards
