wil roll bar comletely eliminate backseat?
I am in the process of resurrecting my 74 911 after laying up for a while. New paint (mex-blue) carrera flares, new interior, susp. to come. I would like a roll bar for safety and creating a look but have a 2yr old son who will spend some time in the backseat and don't know if there is a way to fabricate one or buy a bolt in that will allow that.

Forget the back seat...
A good roll bar will have diagonal braces which make the back seat unuseable. Even if you did have a bar with adequate clearance, it would be a really bad idea to put anyone in the back seat since even a small accident could result in a serious head injury.

If you use a four point hoop without the cross brace or harnes bar he will still be able to get back there. Perf. Pro sells one like that, Autopower i think, which means that Wayne can get it too.
Even so, Lucky is right about safety. Paul

I will thrid the safety issue. Even if your son is well restrained, it's amazing how far heads will move in the event of an accident. Rollbars end up in places where the vehicle manufacturer cannot place proper protection.
Cheers, James

I think the factory eliminated the back seat. There is that cool little space for my briefcase back there, though.

I have used an Autopower roll bar with the removable crossbar and retained the use of my rear seats. However, I did change the rear seat belts to the 3-point variety from a 993 (not a difficult project) and used rollbar padding (not pipe insulation) with a customer leather cover I had made. My two children have spent many uneventful hours without incident.
As a data point, I also totaled a 911 cab (with a roll bar) and a back seat passenger. The passenger was not injured in the accident. I also have a Safety Devices cage with removable cross bar to retain the rear seat access/use. |
