				Name this part!

Any idea what this part is (pictured). I have checked 101 and online (waiting for my Bently manual to arrive) and cannot figure it out. My worry is that gorilla tape wrapped around it. Any ideas?

Hi, I assume your 911 is 1978-79..your part is part of the smog equipment- for the smog pump.Is your smog pump still in place? Most likely not so remove this valve and plug the rest of the system. I do not see more from your pick...? Just get rid of it...;-)but follow some online instructions ...... ivan

Driver's side engine bay. You can see the gorilla tape in the pic below that should give a good sense of where it is. Sorry, I've had the car for a week, still finding my way around.

Ivar - I am sorry, could you also help me with the blue hose. I have just found a split in it so it needs replacing (air patching if that is possible) and I am wondering is this could be the reason for my cold idle issues: CIS Guages - Are these any good? My thanks again mate!

lol - sorry Bob, it would help to point it out. I think I mean the distributer vacuum line. I read in a few threads its an emissions thing so wondering if I can pull that and cap it when I get around to pulling this stuff out.

Plug it with a golf tee. It will advance timing several degrees and the car will idle a little better. Plug it back in for emission testing if applicable.

Here are some photos of what you used to have. In this photo, you are missing the air pump itself and the black twisty hose. The other part is the piece you have with the tape on it. It connects to the check valve that Ivan posted a photo of up above. The check valve sits in the engine tin, and if you remove it you will be left with an open hole. You want to seal that hole to prevent hot air from under the engine getting sucked into the engine compartment. I riveted a piece of aluminum over the hole. The piping underneath the engine is connected to that check valve, and then it branches off to inject air into each cylinder at the exhaust ports. This is what the piping looks like, as well as one of the air injectors. In my case the injectors unscrewed easily from the heads. You can buy plugs for the air injector holes from Pelican (Part PEL-BRC-02). You have to cut the piping off unless you remove the heat exchangers, in which case you can remove the piping whole in case it is ever needed in the future: Oh, one last thing. That part you have with the tape on it used to have a vacuum hose connected to it. Comes out of the air box to the left of the air filter. You want to make sure that line is plugged. Good luck! Mark
