912E ignition system upgrade
I want to st ip out all the ignition and exhaust system from my 912E beauty, it's over in the UK after starting in San Fran and the spares are getting more and more difficult to source so I want a modern day system on it. I have no intention of selling it as my son wants it next from me lol
Do anyone have any suggestions to upgrade and get away from the SMOG system that was installed by Porcshe to meet regulations? Thanks Paul ![]() |

First, what systems do you have installed now, EGR, air pump, & thermal reactors?
EGR system is mainly recycling exhaust into the intake, you need to remove the valve, plumbing & block off the port on the muffler. Air pump, belt & pulley, tubing, either remove or cap the injection tubes in the heads. Thermal reactors can be removed and Bursh makes replacement “headers” that bolt to the heat exchangers. Secondly what fuel system do you have? Stock AFC isn’t really upgradable, you can only make sure it is in working order, free of vacuum leaks, fuel leaks, etc. The stock points can be switched to electronic, Pertronix is a good brand. If you have the funds, look at Tangerine exhaust system, should last easily to when you hand the keys to your son! |

Hi, in case you have one of the few orginal set-ups then I would run it as is and keep it stock to be honest. Think this will serve you well if you ever sell the car. I'm running my 912e's in stock set-up and it's very reliable as long as there are no vacuum leaks and all hoses in a good shape. Only exception to original set up on my cars is that I use is the removal of thermal reactors with Bursh replacement straight pipes which is much better for heat control of the engine.
Unless something is really broken, my call would be, just maintain it as is. So far I managed to get all service parts for original set-up (just takes a little time to find some bits and pieces but most is still available either new or used) or rebuild/restored the existing parts. P.s. Nice car! And lucky son. |
