red and black both go to coil. i am assuming you have a pertronix, or there would just be a black i believe. red is hot or positive.

it's the wires from the car . i may have hooked them up in reverse and that would explane the smoke .

smoke from inside the disty......hmmmm. Next thing I would suggest is to verify you now have your wiring correct and then do a test light based static timing test to see if the points are making/breaking.

				 | Petronix
As I recall my Petronix instructions said never to leave the ignition switch on for long periods of time without the engine running which could damage (fry) the Petronix unit. That's probaly where your smoke came from. When I do electrical troubleshooting with the ignition switch on I always disconnect the red wire from the ignition switch at the coil to deactivate the distributorand Pertronix unit. good luck! Morrie: Just trying to be helpful. A word of caution can save you from bundle of trouble. He does own a Pertronix unit. Do you disconnect your wire to the Dizzy???? Ron

Was just kiddin Ron, trying to keep it light hearted Yea, reversing the hookups on a pertronix will cook it in a hearbeat from what I am told. Too bad as a strategically placed diode would pop the fuse when power is reversed and save the Pertronix. Still thinkin of what could smoke in a disty with just points and condenser.... maybe the condenser? It is a capacitor, and if it is electrolytic like I guess, they don't take well to having polarity reversed. hmmmmm... any new developments vw505? Morr

				 | Oil Blowby?
Morrie: Could the smoke actually be oil vapor from the crank case. If the dist shaft O-Ring seal is gone or shot?? Or a grounded hot wire inside the dist? Ron

maybe.... if oil is present then its a possibility. A grounded hot wire that smoked should be detectable in a visual inspection. Morr

I had the same thing happen to me WAY back early last year before I had a pertronix. Was adjusting the timing and must of grounded something and fried my condensor... lots of smoke and a rather toasty condensor wire. $11 later for points and condensor and I was good to go...
