How Hard To Get This 2180cc GEX VW Engine In My 912? PLEASE HELP!

Ok my 912 is terribly underpowered and so is my wallet. I just can't afford to have my 912 engine rebuilt to hi-performance specs.
I have heard a lot of people talking about putting VW engines into 912s. This sounds very appealing to me. I know that GEX sells 2180cc Dual Port turn key VW engines with Weber carbs and all for $2800 + shipping. Thats very affordable to me.

What I need is for someone to explain exactly what I would need for this conversion. I would order that engine and it says it comes with everything except exhaust and clutch for a regualr VW.

So basically what would I need to put this engine in my 912?

I am thinking:

1: Some sort of different throttle cable (but what kind?)

2: A custom exhaust (or will my 912 exhaust work?) I just want an exhaust I don't need a heater of any sort.

3: A stock (new) 914 flywheel.

4: A heavy duty clutch kit of some sort (but what kind?)

I think that would be about it or am i missing somthing? My 912 has the stock (but optional) 5-speed trans in it. So I would assume I would need a heavy duty clutch for that transmission and the 914 flywheel.

Other than that do I need any more actual Parts?

And what kind of modifications are needed to make the engine bolt in?

Thanks for the help guys, I have no one else to turn to because no one here knows anything about Porsches or these types of conversions.

Thanks,
Dustin

Hi: Steve is right, build your own! they are plenty of VW fans to give you advise and lend a hand on your project. I have not sort everything out but I am doing the same w/ a 66'912. The stock 200mm VW, will fit my 902 4 speed, and I do not about the 5 speed. I will use a regular header w/inverted muffler to exit on the driver side, the throttle cable I will experiment w/a universal cable... keep in touch. Someone out there should let us know about which flyweel will fit...200mm VW or 914 flywheel? I need to know about that because I intent to later change to a 5 speed. Have fun!

Hey, Dustin-my '66 912 had a VW Type 1 engine in it when I bought it-in fact, that was the main reason I bough it-I've owned (and modified) a few Bugs in the past, so I figured it was time to move up to a Porsche with a motor I already knew and could afford parts for. The VW Type 1 motor will slide right in the 901 5 speed transaxle (I've got one)-the mounting bolt pattern is the same. Use a VW 200mm 12 volt flywheel and pressure plate, a Porsche 912 200mm clutch disc, and the stock Porsche 912 throwout bearing (you may want to go ahead and buy a new one as long as you can get to it.) The 912's starter should work fine with the VW flywheel-in fact, the Bosch model #-SR17X starter is used in both 912's, 914's, and VW buses! You'll have to fabricate a new throttle cable-use a universal cable sold for dune buggies. The rear engine mount will have to be fabricated to bolt the rear of the Type 1 case (use the 3 tapped bolt holes around the oil pump) to the rear Porsche engine crossmember, but it's not too difficult. The 912's exhaust won't fit the VW motor-the exhaust ports are different. Use an aftermarket system for a VW-there's plenty of room behind the engine for it to fit. By the way have you posted a question like this before, or am I confusing you with someone else? Just curious. Good luck, and feel free to email me with any questions-and click on the link below to my 912's restoration site.
