I need some help to determine if a 1968 911 dash pad will fit and look correct for a 1966 912. Are they different? Have located a 911 1968 dash and would like to use it if it is correct for my 1966 912.
I would appreciate someone's expert opinion on this .

Thanks so much Bill

I had a very early '66 Euro 912, delivered from the factory with 5 gauges, one was an outside temperature gauge with a red or amber light that would light up at 37 degrees F. Red exterior, satin black dash with brushed aluminum inserts. Factory electric steel sunroof, 5-spd dogleg transmission, naugahide seats with corduroy inserts, silver painted steel wheels.

A '68 dash will not work on a '66. If you can make it fit, it will look fine. An uncracked '68 dash is a rare item and worth a fair amount.

You have to change the front mounting points (under the windshield) as the early dash pads and the 68 are in different locations. As far as I know, the vinyl dashes for 68 were single piece vacuum formed over foam and once cracked were basically junk. Reupholstering these dashes usually required stitching go get things to fit properly.
The earlier dashes were two piece which allowed them to be reupholstered. The front piece was vinyl over horsehair which had been lacquered to make it firm and allowed for curves in the shape and tight stretching/gluing of the material. The second piece (basically the flat piece which layed on the horizontal was easily upholstered and mounted to the larger first piece.
There might be exceptions as a friend owned a 68 911L with full leather option which included the dash and his dash was 2 piece.

I've included a few photos of my 68 with a 66 dash which I used off of a parts car since I could reupholster it (just the opposite of what you're thinking of doing) I think as long as you get the mounting squared away (not hard to do) any of the 66-68 will look fine.
