Question Matching numbers ?

What is the deal with matching numbers ?
I gather it is a way of establishing whether or not the engine, for example, is the original one ?
But how ?

Hello

You can run a factory cardex witch will tell you the engine and trany numbers from the first delivery. It is not like on some US brands that the numbers match. On pre 68 cars the bodynumbers are also stamped into the dooers and hoods. Later cars have it scriped on..

Matching numbers are from interesst for collectors but didn´t give much to "drivers".

Grüsse
