Question about a hose behind the engine

I recently acquired a 1968 912 that has been parked and not started for the past 3 years. I was cleaning the debris around the engine and noticed a hose in the rear of the engine that is dangling on one end. The hose is connected on the right side of the engine housing and wraps around the back where it is left dangling. I assume that it is supposed to connect to something on the left side of the engine housing, but I don't know where. Can anyone describe what this hose is for and if it should be connected to something? Sorry, but I do not have a picture of the situation. If no one can answer this question, I will try to post a picture which may be more helpful. Thanks very much.

A picture would help a lot. Where exactly do you mean when you say "right side of the engine housing" ? Give a more specific location like ; near the oil breather, near spark plug #4, near oil junction block, ect., ect. What is the approx. diameter of the hose?
Based on your limited description a wild guess would be an oil breather hose. There are 2 of them coming off your oil breather/fill tank. It's not uncommon to find that a previous owner didn't have them going to the right place. One normally goes to the air cleaner on the passenger side carb. and the smaller diameter vents into the head on passenger side. Being a 1968 it may also be a smog related line/hose. Do you still have the smog air pump installed?
Either way try and post a pic. or better yet get a good repair manual. There are some good ones out there that pretty much show every part of these cars.
