1965 912 questions
I'm thinking of purchaceing a 65 912. It's in great shape the owners asking $5500. I am a long time air cooled Volkswagen enthusiast. I was told that Volkswagen engines can be used in this Porsche. Is this true? What about V.W transmissions? This 65 912 currently has the 1600cc with well over 100K miles. If I purchace this 912 I would like to drop in a V.W 1776cc or 1835cc and performance trans. How easily can this be done? Can anyone tell me what type of mods. I would have to make? Any advice, suggestions or information would be great.

in a '65, you should keep the original porsche engine, as it's the pinnacle of 356 engine development, and doens't share much at all with it's VW flat four counterpart. the '76 912E was the one with the VW type IV engine in it.

wow! 65 912 for $5500, sounds like a fair price!
you should stick with the original 912 engine. you'll be much happier. it already has 90+ horse power (correct me if im wrong porsche gurus) ... whilst the 1776cc i hear will only do 75+ horse power. (um er... correct me again gurus.. im probably wrong) DEFINITELY, which ever engine you choose.. you should stick with the 901 transmission. However, I do hear wonderful things about built vw transmissions from rancho --- here in SoCal, there are plenty of folks that have gone through the vw swap because they wanted to "save" the 912 engine. definite positives of doing this is that a 1776 has plenty of parts that are readily available and cheaply priced. on a side note .. there is an ORANGE 912 in the UK that has been constantly featured in the porsche mags over there. the mods on it arent too crazy to compromise reliability-- but it sure flies and gives 9elevens a good run. as far as {How easily can this be done?} ... it shouldnt be too hard. the only concern is the engine mount, your gonna need to figure out a way to mount it. anyhoo.. hope to see some pics soon!

Actually I would like to rebuilt the 912s engine and trans. It runs and drives well but has well over 100k miles on it. My Volkswagen question stemsfrom the fact that I know Volkswagens, parts are readily available and the cost issue. I do have two other projects in the works right now. I can purchace a nicely built 1776 or 1835cc with dual Weber 44 idf carbs for around $2000. And a super street trans for $500. I can't have the engine and trans rebuilt for anywhere near that price. What if I have the trans rebuilt and go with the V.W engine until I can do it right?
