66 912 Engine deck emblems

Hello everyone...newbie here...I have already searched through the forums for help on this, forgive me if I missed A string that deals with this. I have a 66 912 coupe that has had some fairly extensive body work done on it. As a result I am finding things that do not seem to jive with a 66. One thing is that there are no emblems or script of any kind on the engine deck lid. There is a very nice 66 912 right now on ebay that has both the P O R S C H E lettering and a 912 chrome emblem. My question is Did all 66s come with the same emblems? Any and all help would be a great help...If there is another string that deals with this issue please direct me to it...Thanks in advance

You should have a '912' slanted script mounted on the passenger side of the rear decklid and the typical separate PORSCHE letters on the lower rear portion. If it's an early 66, there might be a chance that the Porsche lettering is the joined type found on the earlier cars. Either way, look very closely at the underside of the decklid for filled holes - 2 for the 912 emblem and 2 for each letter. If you see 2 filled holes centered towards the upper portion of the lid, it's off of a 67-69 car.

Thanks a million...I determined that it is the original deck lid and that it originally had the old style script, the connected letter porsche script and the diagonal 912 script. It should be easy to install the new ones, the problem being finding them...still I am much better able to find what this car needs to go back original...Thanks again

Yeah I immediately searched and found both emblems on ebay...they end soon and hopefully I can take another step towards putting her back to original. I also bid on a wabasco gasoline heater from a 65 911...I bid 625 and lost it at 635...any idea what they are worth in case i see another?
I almost went higher, but being that I live in Arizona, heating is not a high priority

Does anybody know a good way to install the new speednuts on the emblem posts on the porsche emblem? It is tucked under a metal brace and I do not have direct access to it, wthout (heaven forbid) cutting a hole. I bought some extras if I need to experiment. Thanks

I have the same gold script on the '66 I just purchased, my question is, everything else on the car is silver(chrome) including the "912" on the rear lid. Should my script be in silver also? Or did they come with the gold standard?

912's came with silver script. Only the 911's and 356's had the gold script and emblems, 74 on they became black. The 67-69 912's had the P-O-R-S-C-H-E letters in silver also. The only gold emblem on the 912 would be the Porsche orange, gold, and black crest on the front hood. The deep red, gold and black crest was used on the later 70's cars.

I have looked at many photos of various 912s and had concluded and Jaems has varified, that there was no gold script on the 912s, but I have seen quite a few with gold script. This I believe is do to the relative rarity of the connected PORSCHE chrome letters and the fact that for some reason they were lost or removed from the 912 and when they went to replace them the only ones they could find were the gold ones. I found 1 on ebay and have not seen another since. I thought that it looked alittle strange to see a chrome 912 with a gold PORSCHE. I believe that mine was hit in the rear and rather than mess with searching for another, they just dechromed the decklid. I will try to post before and after pics if I can figure out how...It made a world of difference and was well worth the price...

Just have the 911 type script chromed.

Actually there were more 912s sold with the chromed script than 911 with the gold. Also the early scripts were two piece.

The 1 I got was 2 pģeces, but was held together by 2 tiny little rivets. This was obviously the weak point where they would break. It also had 4 pins.

After some thought about what jaems said about the commonality of the chrome 912 deck script I came to the conclusion that while he is correct about the roughly 3 to 1 production of 912s to 911s, the 912 only had the 1 piece porsche script for a very short time, from 8 of 65, when the first 912 was produced to sometime in early to mid 1966, when they went to the separate letters. Just the fact that the 356 was produced for 15 years and the 911 for many years, I would think that the 1 piece chrome script is quite rare.

The 356 had a two piece script and so was the 911, in the gold. The 911 went to the gold P-O-R-S-C-H-E letters at the beginning of 67. Also did the 912, except they were chromed. The one solid script be it gold or chrome is an after market reproduction. There were a few very late production 66 912's that had the P-O-R-S-C-H-E letters and the 67 type 912 from Karmann. They seemed to have run out of the chrome script. Also some of the 66 owners updated to the 67 look.

So you are sayimg that the gold one shown above is aftermarket? I could not find any aftermarket scripts. If all that you say is true, then the chrome script was used on the 912 from august of 65 to end of 66,,,I would say that that makes it exceedingly rare.

I found this site http://www.nameyourporsche.com/ that will make any script that you want but the base price is more than 600 dlls and 50 to 80 more for each letter. I think the bottom line is that these script pieces that are NLA are going to become harder and harder to find.
