Question Radio upgrade

I have recently purchased a 67 Irish Green 912 and am considering a radio upgrade. I have the original but there is an old Sanyo in the dash there were no cuts made to make it fit. I am concerned with putting a newer system in the car and how to hook it up I went underneath to take a look and found a red wire with an inline fuse ( not sure where it goes)and just the speaker wires connected there is a black wire which I think is the ground but it is not connected and when I did connect it it blew the inline fuse. When I turn the car off and the radio is still in the on position the radio still plays. I will mount the new system under the dash or build a holder for it so not to make any modifications. Has anyone upgraded their system and what can I do.

I am doing the same thing right now with my '67. I reinstalled the Blaupunkt and I had it working for a day but now it's just for decoration. The Blaupunkt has two power wires to it. There is a yellow one with the fuse coming off the ignition, and the red with white stripe one from the battery. If you use the yellow wire the ignition will need to be on for the stereo to work.

The new Sony decks have a funny triangle/cone wired remote which I've heard good things about. I am considering putting that in the dash and putting the deck in the glove box. A display would be nice though. One idea for a subwoofer is to partially fiberglass in the hatch in the hood, and port it into the cabin. Cool idea but a little too permanent for my tastes!

I'm still spending money on the engine but the stereo is next. Let me know how things work out!

I had a Blaupunkt RPD540 CD player in mine. You have to cut the dash out, but bring it to your local hardware store, and they'll cut the metal for you. The yellow wire is for when the ingition is off and the red if for when the ingition is on. The black is ground. As far as the inline fuses, I took them out. The new units have fuses built in. Other than that, you wire up the speaker wires and are set. The unit should come with instructions and its very simple. One word of advise though, don't put speekers in the rear wheel wells like the PO did on my car. My next project was to replace the panels because they leak bad! Instead I was told that you can put the later 911 rear decks in with the speekers. Looks good and doesn't require cutting huge holes in you car. Oh, and make sure everything works properly. The reason I got the Blaupunkt is because the amp put in by the PO blew out the ENTIRE system, fuses and all. The speekers where blown (go figure, seriously ) The reciever and amp were fried, and every fuse on that circuit was blown. All this in about 1 second. The amp had internal problems but it also was VERY poorly wired. Just a thought. Personally, I would rewire everything if you're having problems. I did. Took a week, an hour or so here and there, and everything worked perfect when finished. Total bill with speakers and CD player, $200. And you get a better installation than any place would give you. And yes, I was an absolute beginer. Its not hard and its fun. Good luck.

Hi,
I put a Kenwood header unit in my 67. Someone had previously attempted to cut open the radio hole with, I can only imagine a spoon, so more time was spent cleaning that up than fitting the stereo.

In my new (er) 69 912 I'm fitting a Blaupunkt in car navigation unit, it's the same size as the standard unit. I'm then fitting the cd changer either under the dash or in the glove box.

Cheers
Alan

Cool

Well I got really lucky on my 912 and found a VERY rare Blaupunkt Nashville (the Shaft style one not the SQR series) it is a sweet deck. It is cassette but has full CD changer control. It fits without any cutting. It's a really nice deck but I will probably end up taking it out and trying to find someone who can cut the dash without hacking it up and then just get a new Eclipse CD player to go in there as soon as Eclipse comes out with their new units again.

Wink Radio Upgrade

I would like to thank everyone who replied to my message about upgrading my radio. I plan on reinstalling the old unit (for show only)in its normal spot and building a box to hold my new pioneer unit with a 12 disc CD canger. I have figured the wiring out and will post photos when done Thanks for your ideas. I remember seeing in an old catalog of performance a center console they had. Does anyone know if they are still in business.
