msd ignition and generators

ok if you have a generator on your car and you want to use a msd capacitive discharge ignition don't use the new type of regulator from Bosch!!!!!

just installed my generator after being rebuilt and also replaced the voltage regulator. then i ran down the street with it.
i got 2 miles then the generator melted, literally the leads from the commutator came un soldered and two bars from the com are missing.

the new type regulators do not regulate current!!!!
the msd ignition will draw as much current as it can
generator only rated for 25 amps!!!!

next thing is to go out to Emory's and get a alternator kit for my little beast

Rod's insulation is real clean. They did a very good job on the alternator stand. I just would not consider using a generator again on a non concurs car. However, they are a little on the spendy side.

Was you regulator a 20 or 25 amp. The early generators were 20 amp and if you don't match the regulator it will toast your generator. I have been running a msd for 8 years now.

it was stamped 25a- dont know what i was drawing. i plan to throw a amp clamp on the output of the alternator to see whatthe draw realy is. upon further investigation i found that the published draw for the msd is 1A pe 1000rpm, that still puts me under the rating for the generator.

the alternator kit is working great now. i am now able to run higher wattage lamps in my headlights.
