Just firing up my 912 with a newly rebuilt engine... large pistons, cam, webers, etc.
The engine sounds great, just two (so far) minor problems. 1. battery is not charging. I know I don't have any grounding straps on engine or trans. (car was a basket case when I got it) and I'm not sure what they look like or where they should attach 2. the fuel filters in the gas lines (I have 2 - one before the engine and one after the fuel pump) don't ever fill completely with gas. The engine seems to run out of fuel after a short while. Do I need to purge the line, or something? Any and all help is appreciated Thanks, John Last edited by interga47; 10-15-2002 at 08:41 AM.. |

Well I'm definately not a Porsche expert(only had mine for a couple of weeks so far)but I've worked on just about everything else extensively... for the charging problem...check all of the wiring connections from the generator to the regulator back to the battery. If that all looks good(and is correctly wired) try adding a ground strap(braided copper strip) from the chassis to a point on the tranny or engine...otherwise its probably a bad gen. or regulator is toast(yep they can go bad in a way that keeps from charging...just like they can go bad by overcharging...that lesson cost me a lot of money once..long, long ago).
For the fuel problem...check the diaphram in the fuel pump...and make sure the lines are clear from the tank to the pump...also I've seen fuel lines that sucked air close to the tank...wouldn't leak but acts like astraw with a hole in it...not muck fuel flow. Other than that..."not much tellin' not knowin' ". Congrats on the engine though !!! I'll probably be having mine rebuilt sometime in the next year...ouch goes the wallet!!!

I had thought about the fuel pump diaphram.... but I want to check one other thing (in addition to your fuel line hole) Ever hear about purging the fuel line? A friend suggested loosening a fitting after the fuel pump, while I have someone crank the engine over, to allow all the air to purge out of the line. Make any sense? I also need to get a colored wiring diagram for a 912.... the black and white page I have now is difficult to trace thanks for the help, John |

Yeah...thats a good idea. I have run into that before ,but mainly on high pressure fuel injection systems and especially with diesels. What I'd do is remove the line after the pump and attach a length of fuel line to run to a bucket or gas can...that way if the pump starts doing its pump thing it doesn't soak the engine bay in fuel...also if it seems to be pumping plenty of fuel...you might check the float levels in the carbs...if they are set too low not enough fuel will enter the bowl to keep the engine running.
Wish I could help with the wiring diagram...mines B&W also...makes it interesting tracing electrical gremlins.

I would ditch the first fuel filter. One after the filter is perfectly fine.
The chassis ground strap goes from the body to the transmission.

Hi John,
Just a couple of other things I can think of. Purging the lines is a good idea, but also if the car has been sat for a while and the tank has some crud in it this has a tendency to sink to the bottom and may interrupt the flow of fuel. Before I?ve just blown compressed air down the line to make sure it's empty. Even after that sometimes the fuel filters will not fill completely up which is not a problem. If all the wiring is ok, check the charge as described in the manual. I can copy this if you need also check the bushes in the generator. You will also need the ground from gearbox to chassis. This is normally to the left of the box (looking towards the front. There is a stud on the chassis over which one end of the strap bolts to and the other then bolts to one of the bolts which hold the front nose of the gear box on. the wiring diagram is great all the pictures are very helpful, as I haven't any idea what things should look like (I didn't take this car apart; bought it in as a basket case) The suggestions on what to look for and test should keep me busy for a little while Thanks again, you guys are GREAT John |

I found a short in the regulator...now everything is charging, although at a little higher rpm than I'd prefer. I cleaned the screen in the fuel pump, which seemed to help a lot. I may go with the electric fuel pump and regulator... should help with the webers; I was just hoping to keep things as stock as possible. My clutch cable seems stretched... I'll try to adjust this morning (it's the last major item) so I can get on the road. I REALLY want to drive this car...I've never driven a porsche, so I'm excited!! The stock pump will work well with Webbers if you want to keep things looking stock. When the clutch cable needs frequent adjustments due to stretch it is most likely about to fail. A busted cable makes for an interesting drive home. (S*** another red light!) You can pull the cable out of the guide and inspect to see if the strands are starting to fray around the bends and at the fittings. Considring that they run about $10 it is worth replacing it rather than reinstalling it. Grease it up but good. let me know if you need to see anything asembled, I have a bunch of underside images.
