1976 912e need air conditioning a/c wiring help
I need help figuring out wiring and where there should be relays for a 1976 912e a/c. I'm not getting power to my clutch or blower motor and there is a group of about 5 wires taped up not plugged into anything and im guessing they are for my ac. In the group of wires there is a red wire which is hot coming off of the second fuse on the fuse panel (the second if you count from the rear most fuse forward.) Next there is a black wire which I think is along side my white clutch wire that isnt hot. There is then a smaller gauge white wire(not the clutch wire) then a couple of brown wires. I'm guessing there should be a relay that all those wires plug into and my red supplies power to the relay then black goes to my fan control which then goes to my blower motor and the clutch hooks in that relay somewhere too. I would love if you could post pictures of your wiring in your smugglers box, any a/c relays you can find, and if you have any more information I would love to hear it. I appreciate any help you can give me.

The typical AC circuit would be alike this

I appreciate that and it will aid me greatly, but im not sure of the actual location of the relays. Are you saying just buy relays and start plugging in where the wires end? Any photos of your wiring and relay location would be great.

Assuming the 912 AC wiring harness was alike the early 911. Referring the schematic, clockwise'ish from top
AC Fan Speed Switch - if you have knee pad vent panel its the switch on the right. Relay AC - in the smuggler's box, passg corner side Evap Fan Resistor pack - some early year cars built this feature either into the fan speed switch, into the evap motor, or mounted one in the RH evap air intake under the passg side foot board Evap motor - assuming you have an integrated evap box its in there; evaporator located in Smugglers Box in front trunk Cooling motor AC - is the front condenser blower motor, adjacent to the battery in LH front corner of trunk. Electromagnetic Clutch - on the compressor Cooling Fan Motor AC - a relay for the front condenser motor; relay panel in trunk Temp Switch - if you have knee pad vent panel its the switch on the left. |

So it looks like I have a ccccool vw products corp. a/c unit which would be after market dealer installed and not a factory installed unit. Would the wiring be the same as a factory a/c car?

It won't have a Evap Fan Resistor pack because it has a cheaper type evap motor.
Time you took out your test light, VOM and did some poking. You have a schematic which is close enough. |

So here's the diagram I came up with that I'm running with my cccool A/C system. Important notice: I have only run the car about 30 seconds to see if it was going to smoke any wires, I didn't see it smoke any and I will continue running it this way and will update the diagram if I find an issue. note: I know some of my wiring might varie from factory because the last mechanic changed a couple of wires, but it should be close enough to factory that you can figure out a way to make yours work like it.
A couple of notes on general 912 A/C. If you are working on your A/C I would recommend swapping the old factory york compressor for a sanden 508 rotary compressor available through ********** on ebay for $319 and it include the mounting plate that bolts to the factory york plate. You will have to drill one maybe two holes in your york plate to make it adjustable. The fittings they send you have R12 service ports, so I would recommend replacing them with 90 degree fittings with 134A service ports. if I remember correctly they are #8 and #10 size lines just go to ebay and search saden 90 degree fittings and you will find them. I purchased mine from acpartsguys on ebay for about $15. An important note to remember is to rotate your compressor so the service ports face the fuse panel other wise the service ports will hit your condenser when the trunk is closed. For belt size I don't remember but I will post another comment if I can find out what size. For my A/C relay I am running a Dorman 84601 universal relay 4 prong 30 amp. From my research they said you needed atleast a 25 amp relay and 30 was the closest I could find, I will continue running this and will post an update if it gives me issues. I hope this helps someone Cause it sure would of helped me when I started. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

There was no "factory ac" for the 912E. It was all a somewhat unique VPC setup that was installed at dealers. Don't expect AC at all like a new car but it may get you through an otherwise unbearable summer.
Here's the original instructions for installation: http://www.texas912.org/912E%20Tech%20Data/COOL%201976%20Porsche%20912%20ZPW%20203%20912.pdf |

And there was the Porsche Air system for the 900 series which featured and additional condenser in the LH front fender. Also, dealer installed.

I thought when Delanair helped design the early system marketed under Porsche Air they stated it was available for 4 and 6 cylinder models. The brochure stated "compressor is mounted horizontally, out of the way, behind the "four or six cylinder engine". Maybe Porsche never put the 4 cylinder engine in the 911!

The 912E in this context is a completely different car from the 912. Delanair was a while before the 912E even came out. Remember this is 1976 only.
The VPC kit had a smaller compressor (mini York) and only one condenser (decklid). There's also the retroair kit that has recently become available. |
