65 912 engine serial location / blank case?
Gents,
I just picked up an early 65 912. I do not see an engine serial number in the typical location below the generator. What's your thoughts? I am awaiting the COA from Porsche, but was curious on the early cars (65-66) if there was known cases of original engines with no engine serial? Is there another location they would have stamped it? Chances it's a factory blank case or a blank replacement from a past engine swap? thanks in advance

The 3rd piece of the case with the serial number can be swapped around relatively easily. It is not really a true indication of an original engine, although it is used as such to gauge value. It could be nothing more than a replacement 3rd piece. Check the stamps on the top of the case halves to indicate at least an early engine type. There are stampings on the case halves that will date it exactly but the 3rd piece needs to be removed to see them.
Someone else may have but I have not heard of a 912 leaving the factory with a non-stamped 3rd piece as new.

If a complete new replacement engine was installed at the dealership, there will not be a engine number. Unless the dealership stamped it.

Hi over there.
Pls. attach a photo of the generator indicating the place with missing numbers. I have the same "problem" with my 912 from 66. The possible explanation I got from Porsche-reg912 was that spare parts do not have numbers :-) |
