912 starter question
A friend of mine picked up a 12/65 build date 912 that has been sitting for some time. Hooked power up to it to check condition of wiring and just to get an idea of how complete the car was. Wanted to check lighting etc. When the key is turned to start the starter does not turn- all you hear is a clicking coming from what sounds like under the rear seat backs. Is that the starter relay? Clicking instead of sending power to the starter?

Yep! actually it is the starter solenoid. It is not getting enough juice to kick in the started. Sometimes the old cable from the battery to the starter. Becomes polarized and will need a relay installed to help busted the current to the started. Also check and see if the yellow wire is connected to the starter. Sometimes this will be accidentally disconnected.
You can hook a battery up direct to the starter and see if it will turn the starter. Make sure that the car is out of gear. If it turns good. Then you will have to install the relay. |
