Replacing the Wreck.

I've finally given up on fixing the wreck. It's been sitting since november with no change. The body shop guy that was gona help me dosn't feel capable of putting it together right. So I'm in the process of looking for a new body. I found this one http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/3/8/48599638.htm . The guy I talked to told me that the boddy is in excellent shape except that the battery tray and support have been replace with something home made. The car does not run because of something with one of the pistions. Also included is a second engine and transmission which I believe is a 1.7 because the blown engine in the car is a 1.7. Would anyone in the Seattle area be able to take a look at it? I'm about a 5 hr drive from there and would really appreaciate it if someone could take a look at it.
The price is way to much in my opinion, but that's all a matter of talking it through
Thanks,
Eric

Yeah, I can go look at it but that seems kinda high price for a nonrunning car with rust.

Bleyseng- I just got 16 pic's of the car, looks like the engine compartment is clean, and that the rear trunk has been rust repeared. The only area's of concern are behiend the seat's and there is no good pic of the suspension, but overall there appears to be a lack of rust. I would agree though that it is high. What would you guys think is fair? $1500?

More info - Just got off the phone with the guy. He probably isn't going to go below 2K because of the part's that come along with the car. He has two 1.7 engine's in box's one with a bad set of pistions I do believe. Two tranny's Sideshifter's I would assume , stanless steel heat exchangers, and a new muffler. At this price it seams like a fair deal for a rust free body and a bunch of parts. The big question is, what would those part's be worth, and how easy would they sell. I was thinking I could just offer them to Gary Emory at a certain price for the whole lot. Who knows, would anyone on here be intrested in these parts if I were to buy the car? Oh and the stuff behiend the seats is the tar from the factory.
Thanks,
Eric Taylor

I think Emory has more than he can deal with... I doubt he'll offer you much at all for the lot.

Guesses at "values" of parts: 1.7 engine cores are $150-250. Used SSIs are $150-250. Used transmissions (unknown condition) probably in the $250 each range. New muffler depends on the exact muffler--but you'll never get "new" price for it, even if it has never been mounted on a car.

You might have a grand worth of parts, maybe. Less if sold in a lot, more if you sell part by part. Probably about $30,000 if you e-bay it.

Ok, I went and looked at the car and here are some better pics. The battery tray is gone and so is the engine shelf. The long looks ok. Gotta weld in new stuff here.

the paint is nice as it was repainted in 93 and then the engine blew up.

Looks like a $500 roller. The parts $300.00. Save your money and find a driver. $2000.00, tell hem to ebay it.

Yeah, its not even a 2.0L and the battery tray work is expensive to fix right. It is a fairly rust free roller but they guy seems to think it has inflated value. I think you could get it all for $1500 but even then I think its high.
Car all done- $4500 value
Engine rebuild- -$3000
Battery tray/shelf- -$1000
Brakes rebuilt- -$500
Tires- -$400
So you can see where its going. The owner just thinks you can install a new 93mm piston and reassemble the motor. The piston had blown out the ring lands, maybe from overrevving. The car was running a single carb set up but the Djet is in a box. Has new heat exchangers and some other parts too.

Geoff - Thanks for doing this I sent you a PM bout it. I don't know where people get such high values for cars like this. Must be the letters on the engine lid

Well I just got off the phone with the guy. I hit him at $1000 for the whole thing and he seamed, well taken back I guess you could say. He wasn't gona go that low , I guess he's thinking about getting it taken to a donation site or something for a tax write off. His attitude was sure different about the whole thing I guess Geoff let him know what the real value was. Did you take the teener out there by the way?

Of course I drove my 76 out there! He was nice just didn't know the value of it or the cost of the repairs. He should take the $1000 if he was smart.

if he gives it to charity and it goes to auction it will be had for less than $500. not knowing your price range, check autotrader online. there were a few complete, running cars recently. the orange car has too many problems. you'd be money ahead spending $4500 on a car with a running engine.
