You'll probably need to clean out everything that has fuel sitting in it--the tank, the lines, the injectors, pump, the pressure regulator... After that, it should work.

You'll have to do about half of that even if you swap to carbs--they don't like gummed-up varnish in place of fuel either. Additionally, you'll have to change the fuel pump for a low-pressure one, possibly re-work the fuel system layout (e.g., do you have a full loop fuel system, or do you change to a dead-head system?) and change the pressure regulator. That's in addition to changing out the fuel injection parts for the carburetors, plus manifolds and linkage.

That said, if you actually understand carbs, it may be worthwhile to change. If not, it is generally better to keep the stock fuel injection.

There is no better system for a stock 914 other than the Bosch FI. But, diagnosing and testing the system leaves something to be desired. I made the switch to twin carbs on my recent 914 and may try an original Bosch system for my next build.

Since the car has been sitting for a while, it's possible that the fuel injection system may need some attention. Before considering a dual carb setup, I'd recommend trying to get the fuel injection system working properly. It might just need a good cleaning and some maintenance. If you're new to this, it might be a bit challenging to install a dual carb setup right away. It's always a good idea to start with the basics and gradually work your way up. Good luck getting your car up and running again!
