Tools and Procedure for Installing Shifter Springs

Tools and procedure for installing two new shifter springs
(two people are required for the procedure)

Parts needed
(1) Two face shields
(2) One vice with jaw protectors
(3) Four new circlips for two pins
(4) Two new Porsche shifter springs 901-424-133-00 ( the length of my old springs is 3.25 inches and the length of my new springs is 3.052 inches)
(5) One stainless steel valve spring compressor 750-174 for Briggs and Stratton from Amazon (the stainless steel version is better than the version that is aluminum and mild steel) (see photo #1)
(6) One Phillips screw driver with a 3.5 inch shaft length and 0.195 inch shaft diameter
(7) One flat blade screw driver with a 3.5 inch shaft length
(8) One pair of vice grips

Procedure
(1) Grind off some of the end of the spring compressor so that there is clearance between the spring compressor and the reverse lock out plate during installation of the spring (see photo #2)
(2) Adjust the ends of the spring compressor with a pair of vice grips so that the ends of the spring compressor fit in the ends of the spring
(3) Install one of the pins in the shifter assembly without a spring to hold the reverse lock out plate in position.
(4) Install the shifter assembly in a vise with the shifter handle in the down position
(5) Start with the installation of the spring in the other position
(6) Slide the spring onto the shaft of the Phillips screw driver
(7) Put the spring compressor in position so that the portion of the spring compressor with the end modification is closest to the side of the reverse lock out plate with two holes when the spring is installed
(8) Put on face shields
(9) Start compressing the spring with the spring compressor until coil bind occurs (if the spring slips out of the spring compressor it can be launched 30 feet so proceed carefully)
(10) Remove the screw driver and move the compressed spring and the spring compressor to the shifter assembly
(11) Position the ends of the spring so the ends of the spring align with the two holes for the pin
(12) Remove the spring compressor and use the flat blade screw driver and the Phillips screw driver to finish the alignment of the spring with the holes on both sides of the shifter assembly
(13) Install the pin
(14) Install the two new circlips to hold the pin in place
(15) Repeat the process for the other spring and pin
