914 headlight options
Guys,
Besides keeping the original pop-up headlights, what other options are available for the 914's? Brian Minson 9, The DIY Porsche Magazine http://www.9magazine.com |

nothing is "bolt in" anything will require some decent amount of mods... the stock is the cheapest and easiest alternative...

This is a Rennlist post from last November. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information.
Alfred ---- "Hi gang, I found some HID lights that will fit directly into our 914. I'm seriously considering a set for next spring, when the car is back on the road. Has anyone tried these yet? DOT legal, etc. I'm curious about the beam pattern, and how well it works when the 914 is lowered. List price $799, but $499 direct from Sylvania. http://www.sylvania.com/xenarc/x60246054.htm $450 from these guys: http://suvlights.tripod.com/suvlightscom/html/Sylvania-Xenarc-1.htm " |

I've seen a guy that had a whole fiberglass hood that went over the headlight buckets and then he put lights out of a geo I think in for the fog light grills.

Check through the "Big Four" tech article on our tech articles page, it will have a link to Mike Nugent's site for "914 lite". He did that mod.
People have also talked about, and some have even used, 300 ZX lights. I forget if they would pop up or were stationary. --DD

I just upgraded to the H4 Hella lamps. I am vey happy with them as they are much brighter than the stock incondesent. Although these are not HID level, they are very good and have a very nice light pattern. The beam cuts off with a horizontal line right a eye level which means that the lights never bother any oncoming drivers because the light is cut off below their view.
The only modification that I am doing to my existing wiring is I am adding a high power relay which I have to wire direct from the battery & then to my existing switches. This is necessary because upgraded lights draw considerably more power than the existing system is set up for. Adding the new relay will insure good performance. |

I remember some cars back in the '70's with clear covers and stationary lights under them- used in racing so they were much more aerodynamic. Looked cool but probably a lot of work to fabricate... do you have lots of free time????

Stuart,
That is what we are looking for in this 914 Project, the fixed headlights with a clear cover over them. Everyone you can follow along starting starting in 2004 in 9 Magazine the progress of this 914 into a street legal racer! Brian Minson 9, The DIY Porsche Magazine http://www.9magazine.com |

My original '71 914-4 (made in 9-70) only have the lights go up on the second detent. First detent is only parking lights though I did change the wiring so I could use the fog lights independent of the main headlights.( Though I did it over 30 years ago!) I wasn't aware the regular wiring had the lights come up on the first detent...

I got an email from Jeff Fort, he has a 70 914-6, and he wrote that his headlites popup on the first notch on the headlite switch. I checked with a friend who has owned more than a few early 914s and he concured that this is true of the early cars.
My 74 works as you have described Stuart. Thanks CCL

whao. Thats ugly! As for the pop up thing, I'd like to know also. Wouldn't it just be a mattter of rewiring the switch? I'd go look but it's dark outside...

My 1.7 was made in 01/70, and the headlights pop up with the running lights. That pic above looks corvair-ish.

The pop-up question should be a matter of re-wiring the healdight switch, I think.
As for non-pop-up lights, check into the later 300Z cars as donors. You'll have to cut the bumper a bit. --DD

my car when I got it had plain old chevy lights in there with a clear plastic cover.... it was ugly as hell! and it required serious mods to the bumper and the headlight housing...
