What is my engine? It has the complete 1.7 feul injection(oil bath, yellow injectores, no idle screw on ecu) but the serial number is in front of the oil filler tube. So maybe it is a 2.0? The engine code is AP and I cann't find out what it is out of. I am planning to rebuild this engine and would like to know what case I have your help would be appreciated.

i went to a page that listed engine codes for vw's. put in "vw AND type IV" to search. there is an AN and an AT engine that is a carbureted 1.8. just a WAG but maybe somebody built up your engine on a bus block.

Thanks for the info. If it is a bus engine is there some diffrences in the cases. Would it be worth it to get a 914 case?

Very much so if the engine does not have the oil filler and dipstick on the top of the engine. I think I remember that all of the Bus engines (and many but not all of the VW 411 and 412 engines) have the filler and dipstick coming out of the rear side (front side in a 914) of the case and not the top. Tough to deal with in a 914....
AFAIK, that's the only real difference in the crankcase. --DD

DD, would you still recommend the 914 case if the engine is in the car and running? i could see if it is not but couldn't figure out from the post if the engine is in or out of the car. i couldn't see any advantage if the engine is running in the car.

If you've got the engine already--already paid for it--and it has the block-off plate and the top-mounted dipstick and filler, then go for it. Otherwise, why bother? --DD

The engine is out of a car I bought about a year ago and never got around to fixing. The case has the 914 oil fill spout and dipstick and the block off plate for a mechanical feul pump. And yes the engine is out of the car. So the big question is, is the 914 case stronger than the bus case?

No. And since the conversion work has been done, now the question becomes "why not use it"?

Steve,
Were they sold with cylindar heads or as short blocks? I guess I will have to find out what heads I have too. JW

I got the heads off last night and everything looks great. I think I will just get a gasket set and rering it and slap it back in. Thanks for all the help.
