What a Mess...

Last weekend I found time to take the engine out. Problem was a massive oil leak and a "bad" noise...
I dropped the tranny first then the engine. Not a difficult task. I tried to label all the electrical connections and hoses until I got impatient and just disconnected things and figured I would remember later anyway. I am sure there will be a lot of questions later to the list

When I removed the cooling sheet metal I found a mess of old oil, black gunk and pine (?) needles.
Hmmm, would that have an effect on cooling and engine life? I guess, it did.
Judging by the build-up of gooey crap inside the fly wheel, the mainseal was not just leaking since yesterday..

On the bright side, the heads look good. No cracks there.
Next weekend I'll split the case. At this point, I am prepared for anything.

Neal

Wow! You got all the "good" out of that piston, didn't you?

You either have big fat fingers, or that is a 1.7 liter stock piston. Looks to be a little worn. I would replace it.

I dunno, a little bit of bead blasting and a quick coat of silver spray-paint ("Tijuana rebuild"), and I bet you can get a lot of $$ for them on e-bay....

Well, this is a 2L piston and my fingers are NOT fat.
Big maybe and strong, but not fat. Not, not, not fat...
