What engine?

I pulled the starter motor out of my car since it wasn't always starting and have gotten 2 new ones since. One from Pep Boys and the other from Autozone. Both looked nothing like the one I pulled out.

I took it to a place that is supposed to be one of the best in Chicago for a rebuilt starter motor and he gave me the same kind that Autozone and Pep Boys did. So he looked at it and said it looked more like a starter motor out of a bus.

How do I tell if my car has the original 1.8 in it or if it has been swapped?

Thanks

Adam

engine code which is the number on the engine. you can match the engine code to model year and engine displacement. 1.8L should be an EC....... , or at least my 74 is. engine code is on the back of the engine (for a 1.8). you should be able to see it from the passenger side at the rear of the intake air distributor (big black "football" on top of the engine)

Note that the parts book that many of the chain stores use (and others) has the wrong part number for the 914 starter. I believe that the correct one is SR-17X. The wrong one has some other numbers in it. (SR-15X?)
