Blinking Generator Light
What does it mean when the generator light blinks steadily?
I checked the Pelican Parts Q&A for troubleshooting the alternator, but there is nothing listed about a blinking light. I took the 914 to a local mechanic and he says that the alternator and regulator need to be replaced. He's not a 914 specialist, so I wanted to check with the folks here to see if anyone has any suggestions. It's a '74 914 2.0L (not positive on the displacement) with dual carbs and carb cam, and the engine was newly rebuilt when I bought the car in 1999. It's sat in storage for the last 3 years, and I'm trying to get it back on the road again. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

Blinking? Is there a clicking noise when they blink?? Is the blinking regular, or does it change frequency with engine RPM or road speed or something else? Does it go away when you put the handbrake handle down?
Could be as simple as having the brake warning light bulb switched with the alternator light bulb. --DD

There is a clicking noise, it blinks regularly (not related to rpm) and does not go away when the handbrake is down.
But I'll check to see if the bulbs are switched ... it's worth a shot. thanks! |

I think it very likely. And also give reasonable odds that you've recently bled your brakes.... Go find the rubber nipple on the side of the brake master cylinder (where the wires hook up) and press it.
Check the wire colors on the blinking bulb against the wiring diagram; I bet you'll find they're the right colors for the brake warning light. --DD
