1.8L ignition timing at 3500 rpm

The 1.7 and 2.0L motors have 27 degrees of advance at 3500 rpm and the 1.8L motor has 7.5 degrees at 800/900 rpm but I was just curious about how much advance the 1.8 would have at 3500 rpm. Anyone know?

not sure a 1.8L revs that high (just kidding, of course). you can go to 914club.com and downloads and get to the 914 workshop manuals and see in the section for the distributor, the advance curve. i tried to access the site and it is "down"???, otherwise i would have been able to give a degree answer.

Hello,

After working on this with my 75 1.8 FI for a long time and replacing the Vacuum advance canister I noticed mine getting to about 32 degrees at 3500. This is shown on the picture below. When I hok up the vacuum advance I get about 40 degrees. So I have just plugged my advance hose and I feel the engine runs better and cooler.

I hope this helps,

That's right, it winds up at "about" 32 degrees. I believe that the charts in the factory manual put it at 29-32 degrees at 3000 or 3500 (I forget at the moment). RPMs and angles are WRT the crankshaft, not the distributor drive.

Hmm... Those might be totals, but I had thought they were just the centrifugal part??? If they were only centrifugal advance, you'd wind up with 32 + 7.5 == almost 40 degrees maximum advance without the vacuum!! ... So they might be totals instead.

I hate when I start thinking about a subject and wind up more confused than when I started...

Thanks for the information. I found the distributor with part # 022 905 205 AB listed in the PET catalog and the following info in the factory manual (photo below). If I understand it right, the AB distributor would have between 29 and 32 degrees of advance at 3400 rpm with all vacuum hoses disconnected - does that sound right?
