? about mystery wire and the grounds on the motor

guys,

2 questions. i found a wire that is not plugged into anything by the coil. its a green and black striped wire. any idea what it plugs into. heres a pic of the wire.

i was also wondering if i can move this ground in the pic. the ground is a little loose and won't tighten up. but it also won't untighten either. i was thinking about just moving back to where the top transmission bolt comes thru the engine bay. do you think this would work.??

I believe the green/black wire goes to your oil temp sender. You can move the ground to another location but it would be best if you could clean up and tighten the existing terminal. Put some penetrating oil on the threads. From the picture I can't tell exactly where it's at. Is that a bolt? Can you access the other side to tighten it?

Sorry. On the 74 diagram the green/black wire is for oil temp and green/red wire for oil light. I did not realize it was different in 72. One way to find out. Ground the wire (with ignition on), either the oil light will come on or the gauge will peg to the right.

yeah i forgot about the engine size. it's a 1.7.. i'll try grounding it and see what happens. does the wire connect to the ignition coil?? the ground is connected to the engine block on the passenger side. the nut on the far left of the pic is the the transmission bolt that goes thru to the engine bay. this is where i was thinking about moving the ground to. it seems like the bolt that it's connected to right now is stripped or something.

For any year 914/4:

Green/black is for the oil temp sender....Always.
Green/red is for the oil pressure...Always.

On the 2.0L cars I have seen the ground lug attached to the rearmost throttle body bolt on the plenum...works well becasue the plenum is grounded through its attachment bolts, but I dont know about the 1.7L cars. Any bolt connected to the engine case or chassis should work.

If that bolt that is holding the ground is loose, tighten it. Its one of the bolts that holds the two case halves together, note 1.7L EA engine code to left of bolt.

Other than the bolts being different sizes and buggering the terminal to make it fit or old brittle wires breaking when bent to a new position.

The 72s had the oil temp wire in the engine wiring harness. I believe that very few of them actually had the sender or the gauge, but they did have the wire for it...

does that bolt holding the grounds on have on a nut on the other side under the throttle body?. i'm thinking there could be since it won't tighten or untighten.

so dave your saying i probably don't have anything to hook that wire too right?? i didn't really see anything to plug it into except for one of the terminals on the coil.

The green / red wire goes to the oil pressure sensor on the top of the engine case...its there, just gotta look hard for it. Its near the coil, aft of the dizzy.

Yes, for the green/red wire. The green/black temp sender wire probably does not have anything to hook up to.
