Lightbulb 2 Tips For Installing Engine...

Just though I'd share these 2 things with y'all. Most of you will probably read them and say, "Duh! Everybody knows that!". But obviously "I" didn't.

1. Ever gotten your stupid 12mm socket stuck while bolting up your heat exchangers? Happens to me a LOT. So this time I used a grinder and clearanced the heat exchangers just a tiny bit. Also sprayed a little WD-40 on the outside of the socket before sticking it up there.

2. Do not EVER try to install a 30-year old FI wiring harness in 20-degree weather!!! I broke 3 wires and am now contemplating the $320 replacement harness from Jeff B. Either that or start hacking my harness and hoping I get good connections (and don't break any more in the process)

Another consideration on the FI wiring harness that ocurred to me when designing the harness for my Megasquirt FI controller, is to add cable clips to the back of the engine bay (where it arches) just above the rubber. This would get the bulk of the wires off the hot engine.

My $0.02

Very nice idea!

I suggest using a 1/4" drive socket on the heat exchanger nuts. It generally has a smaller OD than a 3/8" drive socket, and is easier to fit in. I use both a normal shallow socket and a deep socket.

BTW, imagine trying to remove the original 13mm exhaust nuts!! Access is even more difficult....

Thats an idea I have toyed with in the past. Actually, I have considered a different FI harness layout altogether, to avoid the engine case heat and clean up the engine compartment.

The idea would be to locate the ECU in its existing location, and run the main harness trunk parallel to and and on top of the cooling air plenum at the front of the engine over to the relay board. There are a couple of existing bosses where rubber covered clamps could be mounted to secure the harness. Perpendicluar branches could easily be routed to the injectors, TPS, TTS, trigger points etc.

I just havent done it yet, but I imagine it might be a better arrangement than stock.
