Question Guage Question

Which year guage has the head temp meter in it in place of the break light? Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

There is no stock combo gauge (the one with the large red light at the top) that has a head temp gauge in place of the red light. There is a combo gauge that has an oil temp indicator (gauge) in place of the red light but I don't know which year(s) or perhaps a special edition car that had the indicator.

I have a combo guage that has the temp gauge in place of the brake light. According to the Dr. 914 book of mine, it says that this guage was optional up to 1972. There is also a combo gauge that the 914-6 came with that is nearly identicle to mine except the brake symbol is different.

When I get home tonight, I will scan in the photo that is in this book. It shows the 4 different models of this gauge. 1) combo gauge, 2) combo gauge for 914-6, 3) normal gauge with large brake light (has a siver button in center & was for 70-74 and 4) normal gauge for 75-76 cars that has a black center button.

Score, I was just doing the same search. I like the former one, but want the silver bullet in the middle like the later.
Thanks Mark!

It's an oil temp gauge, not head temp. But it possibly could be made to work if you can figure out the resistance ranges of each and rework the resistors on it accordingly.

Oil temp is fine, I'll just put head temp in the center console.

oil temp gauge in the left instrument was in all 2.0L cars that did not come with a console so i think that's 73-on

Yup. 2.0 cars that did not have a center console got those. Also 914-6es. If you want one with a silver cone in the middle, it will have to be from a 914-6, or from a 73 2.0 that was special-ordered without a center console.

And yes, it is oil temp.

Oh, I think that some of the very early 914-4 combo gauges had a brake light module that you could remove from the housing just like the fuel gauge module. So you can bolt in a temp gauge module if you are so inclined. But you'll have to figure out somewhere else to put the brake warning light...
