newbie question re 5 lug wheels

What are the benefits of converting to 5 lug wheels? Is it only possible to upgrade to 911 brakes after the wheel conversion?

There are, as yet, no decent ways to put 911 brakes on a 914 and keep the 914's four-lug pattern. So the only way to get 911 brakes is to swap to a 911 front suspension.

There is a much wider selection of decent-sized wheels of the right offset to fit a 914 in the 5x130mm bolt pattern than there is in the 4x130mm bolt pattern. Not too many places make Bug wheels any more (that's the other car that used 4x130mm), and those are pretty much all the wrong offset for our cars. But there are a whole lot of 911 wheels out there, and most of them fit pretty well.

What would be a goos source for a complete 911 front suspension? Been checking Ebay with no luck. I'm in SoCal. Any suggestions?

Check around for 911s at the local wrecking yards. If there's a specialty wreckers, check there. Aase used to be one, but they closed up shop. I don't know who's down there any more...

You really only need the 911 struts/brakes/rotors. You can still use the 914 a-arms although most guys go all the way use the 911 a-arms because they have larger 19mm torsion bars as stock.

FWIW, this is not a cheap upgrade if you do it right. Starting pricing new rotors, new brake pads, new brake hoses, brake caliper rebuild kits, turbo tie rods, new ball joints, bearings, etc., etc. I mean if you are going to have your 30 year old suspension completely apart you might as well refresh it. Figure on $1500 plus the cost of wheels and tires.

Pretty expensive upgrade! BTW, nice car Anthony. Where were those snowy pics taken? Your location says Bay Area but the pics looks like NV.

I bought the car in Reno and drove it over the pass in light snow on the way home.

Search my user name and "suspension upgrade or similar" and you'll find lots of info provided by members who helped with my 5 lug conversion last year. Lots of pics as well.
