transmission rebuild

I am in the process of replacing the sycros in my sdie shifter and whatever else nees replaced.
My question is while pulling the gear stack out I had a small ball bearing fall out. This didn't come from the pinion shaft bearing but I didn't see where it came from, any body know where this goes?

The Ball probably came from the Shift Rod Lock-out System in the intermediate plate. You need to CAREFULLY note how these parts are positioned - they are there so only 1 gear at a time can be selected. If you not familiar with this system you should stop and get a diagram of how it works.

Yes - but I found it best to make my own sketch of the placement as I removed them.

Also be sure and note the thickness of the Gaskets between the case and the intermediate plate - this sets the pinon/ring gear position.

If you were just pulling the stack out when the ball fell...
wouldn't it be more likely the ball came form one of the bearings... The 2 bearing retainers seem to always come apart during this job, and are often trashed from what I've heard/read...

I think the shift lock out balls would roll out if their plug was opened, but I don't think they just fall out loose otherwise?

Of course I could be wrong, and I defer to those more knowledgeable than I... but I'd take another look at those 2 seperate bearings for a missing ball....

I'm with Brant, it is probably your upper intermediate plate bearing.

I'd say its the upper bearing too. Check by wiggling the shaft looking for play, there shouldn't be any noticable play in the bearings. If the ball bearings are falling out they are shot. How much shiney stuff was floating in the tranny oil?

It was too small to be one of the bearings on the shafts I am pretty sure it goes to the shift detent setup

Have you removed any of the internal shift rods which go through the intermediate plate? Did you have the 14mm cover on the side of the intermediate plate removed? If you answer no to these questions, it had to have come out of a bearing, or you have a large hole in the intermediate plate where the shift rods should be...

Yes one of the shift rods was out. From all the exploded views I have looked at it seems to be part of the detent setup.

Yep, that is it. Do a search. I recently posted the correct order for the springs and balls.
