The bug engine is swapped!!!
Well, now that I'm back from my vacation, I can share the good news. The 1911cc Type 4 I built, with parts from Pelican, BTW, is in the car. It's pretty fast

What did you start with? 1.8 case? what other parts did you have at the beginning of the process?
What kind of machine work did you have done? Head work? align boring? Anything else on the case? What kind of injection/induction are you using now? What kind of lifters? Cam? And of course... How much $$$ ? Tony

Well, It was a 1.7 case from a totaled 914.
I re-used the crank and rods, since the car had only about 20,000 on it when it died. I replaced evrything else, with new parts, all the way down to the distributor shaft spring and distributor clamp. All new oil pressure springs, KS and Mahle bearings. The case was align-bored to first oversize, all 13 or so oil galley plugs were drilled and tapped. Everything was statically and dynamically balanced. KB 96mm pistons, which we sell, call for me for prices. 1.8 heads w/44Weber IDFs. Match-ported intake and exhaust manifolds. Mazda RX-7 oil cooler, fender mounted, as is the oil filter. Stainless braided lines for everything. Cam is Web 86 equivalent from SCAT, with aluminum bolt-on gear, and lifters recommended to me by Jake Raby, without who's years of experience this would not have been as much a little monster. Valves are 44x38, all set at .006", of course. 0.35"deck height, heads cc'ed at 54. 9:1 CR, nice and tight. 30mm blueprinted oil pump. Holley 70-psi fuel pump, dropped off to 5-psi, for eternal durability. It's loud as heck though. The fuel pump sounds like someone turned on a vibrator, and stuck it in my front trunk. But, alas, this car was not built for anyone's comfort but my own, and squeaky urethane bushings w/Koni's at full stiff, and obnoxious fuel pumps don't bother me one bit. In the werks right now is a titanium engine tin set-up being custom-made for me by a buddy who's a titanium metallurgist. As for price, I can't say for certain at the moment. I can tell you that with shroud and exhaust, and full parts list. I've got over $5,000 in the engine. Like Jake says, he's not in this for the money, because if you do the engine right, it already costs a good bit, and most people won't pay 6500 or 7000 for a 1911cc air-cooled motor, but it's what I love, and what I wanted(2.7RSR not being allowed by the wife) Basically, I love it, and will be for quite a while.

Thanks again Jake!
Also, I'd like to thank Otto, for sharing his tricks and secrets from 30+ years with me also. You guys are a credit to good ol' boy mechanics the world over, and I really appreciate your open-minded, willingness to help out.

Hey Jason! Glad to see that you got it running. Our motors are almost the same. I'm running 40 idf's and a European E grind cam. 48x38 valves. I'll try to send you some pics of my 70. Maybe some video if possible. Good little motors...have fun dude! I'm taking it easy now cause I just got a speeding ticket off my record. CHP caught me doing 88 in a 65 in the Bug...I was just cruising too.
Late, Eddie.

It pulls hard from the time the speedo is at zero, until after the needle is buried (90MPH), and I can tell you that I took my buddy for a ride yesterday, and he just said "holy $h!t, holy $h!t, holy $h!t. I'm glad you've got good brakes! This thing pulls like a small block"
![]() I couldn't be happier...unless maybe my wife lets me get that new gearbox I've been eyeing ![]()

Cool!! Sounds like my car. I'm running a 3.88 r/p with stock gears(PUP special $50/4 + years of use) and 205/70/15's on the back. It cruises 70mph at 3400-3500 rpms. But still has legs and rpms to get way past 90.
What exhaust are you running?? Late, Eddie.

Looks good Jason!!! I almost bought one of those shrouds. I know that it's not one of Jakes favorites. Does it have directional vanes for air flow?. It looks pretty damn cool though...hopefully it cools your motor efficiently.
Take care, Eddie.
