stupid question
Are the rear brakes on a 914-4 and 914-6 the same or different. I have a 914-6 with a right rear brake that is sticking. I am probably going to buy a 914-4 to part out and was wondering if the calipers would work. If not, how hard is it to rebuild a caliper? I am not the best when it comes to working on cars, but like to take on new projects. My mechanic told me a while back that he stopped rebuilding 914-6 rear calipers because they were annoying.

They are almost the same. The -4 parts should bolt up on the -6, but they are not identical. The pistons inside the -4 caliper are smaller than those on the -6, and you may need to grind the inside of the caliper very very slightly to clear the -6 rotor. Or you can turn down the OD of the rotor by a bit. Or you can mount the calipers slightly further out from the wheel center by some means.
Rebuilding the Six calipers should be almost the same as the Four ones, I believe. You will need to find a rebuild kit with the correct seals for the pistons, though, and probably combine that with the -4 rebuild kit... http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_caliper_rebuild/914_caliper_rebuild.htm --DD

According to my book (914 Tech Tips):
The 914-6's looked almost identical to the 4, but the piston was larger (the same size as the rear on the 911T) and the rear outside was a little rounder. |
