V8 disassimbly question.

Actually I'm not disassimbling the whole motor but I'm trying to remove the front crank pulley and attached dampner. It's a 283 that was built in 1960 and the problem is that it has no bolt that attaches these pieces to the crank, Like most (all) I've come across before (later models I guess). My engine building book says that some engines come without a bolt but then it doesn't tell the procedure for removal in this case. There doesn't seem to be conventional bolts that connect the pulley to the dampner either, has a sort of rivet looking set up - so I assume they come off together... maybe using some kind of big puller tool? Looks like a machined area for accepting a puller inside the assembly. Has anyone here come across this problem before? TIA!

OK here's a picture of what I'm dealing with.. this show's the pulley with the "rivet" type fasteners that connect it to the harmonic balancer - I don't see any way they could be seperated from each other. Also, notice that there isn't a bolt holding this assembly to the Crank. So is a Harmonic Balancer puller all I need to remove this, when I go to rent the tool will they know what I'm talking about (any special terminalogy I should use?)? Thanks.

Jared, thanks for the help - I thought those pulleR tools were "3 bolt puller" or something like that, which wouldn't work with what I have pictured...but were to be used after the pulleY was removed. Am I confused and is there some other type of pulleR for this setup? In other words if the parts guy tries to hand me a "3 bolt puller" what should I ask for instead - most of the PepBoy crew are as clueless as I am! TIA.

You want a balancer puller. It uses the bolt holes to grab the balancer, and a center screw to force it off the crank. The $10 outfit from Harbor Freight works fine, but you should be able to get a loaner from FLAPS.

Guy, I'll take your word for it and give it a try but I'm still concerned because (from my picture above) only two of the 4 holes are empty. So if using the puller that you pictured, I could only attach 2 bolts to it (besides the large center push bolt). I assume too that there's enough room behind the balancer to get a nut on each of those bolts. I'll quit doubting now, and just give it a try - I really appreciate you and Jared's help!

Usually the holes are threaded since they are used to bolt on the pulley. Never seen a two-holer but if you're careful bolting it up should work fine. Just get it as close to the balancer as you can. No threads and can't get nuts behind it, then guess you'll need a big 3-jaw puller (or tap the holes).
