Engine running Rich - help!

Alright, ill respect you forever if you can hlep me solve my problem.

My engine is running to rich. Right now i have the head temp sensor grounded out, as george hussey (sorry for mentioning this name here) instructed me. However, he wasnt able to help me solve my problem. I've tried adjusting the gaps in the distributor, still no cigar. Their is fuel pressure, and the spark plugs are new. Could this be a distributor points issue? Any suggestions. Also, i have no high end power, it just doesnt rev high. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. Thank you, adam

There is fuel pressure--good! How much of it? Does the flap in the air flow meter move smoothly? Are the parts the correct ones (correct part numbers) for a 74 914 1.8?

Is the basic engine in good shape? Compression, valve adjustment, etc? How about the ignition system? Does it get a good healthy spark, is it at the right time? Does the advance work smoothly? Does the timing mark stay steady when the RPMs are steady?

Step one... Check out Brad Anders page for general trouble shooting. While that page is for D-Jet, he has great tips on what to look at.
http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders/djetparts.htm

Step two, everything above for sure.

Step three - fuel pressure - is it at spec or is it too high?

Step four - Is the return fuel line clean. Pull the tank and check out the return. I fixed one of these with a friend that had all kinds of gunk in there and his fuel pressure was always high. We cleaned out the metal tube in the bottom of the tank, got a new csealing washer and all was normal again.

Good luck.

I've got $5 that says if you put one of those plastic hand vacuum pumps you can get at your LAPS on your manifold pressure sensor, it'll show you that the diaphragm in your manifold pressure sensor is hosed. See Brad's web pages for testing/troubleshooting instruction.

Without a properly operating head sensor, Dispite Georges idea, your engine will always be out of whack.

True, but grounding the HTS lead will cause the mixture to go leaner than it otherwise would. If your problem is that the mixture is too rich, this can help you in your diagnosing.

I'm still waiting on answers to the fuel pressure/basic engine condition/ignition system condition questions.
