Questions about console
I am considering purchasing an after market center console and I am curious about one thing. Do you folks who have consoles find it constrain/restrict your right leg when driving.
I'm 6' so I need every square centimeter of space I can find. Thanks in advance Bill |

i removed the console because my size 9 shoe rubbed on the console, not enough room for me.

Thats a tough one, do you have a picture of it? I installed one for a friend and man, did it suck. The only (main) problem i've run into with wide centerconsoles is heel-toe downshift (braking and blipping the throttle, my calf hits and my heel can't reach the accelerator)

My center console never interfered with me and I'm 5'11". It's a stock console; not sure of the width but can measure later. Like BigD9146gt said your leg might rub it a little when doing heel-toe shifting. Not consistently enough to annoy me.

Thanks for the help folks.
The unit I was considering is sold by one of the folks over on the 914club.com. They produce stuff like consoles with speakers , subwoofers ect as well as other interior parts. They were kind enough to offer to sell me a kit so I could customise it with a vinyl that matched my interior. Since my main desire is to have additonal space for mounting gauges I may spend some time this weekend with some foam core and a xacto knife to see what sort mini console I can come up with. (It's nice when the car is running so good I have time to screw around with things like this!)

I am 6'2", ca. 215 lbs and have the same console. I wear a size 12 shoe. The console is no problem whatsoever for my leg. My shoe does rub against it but only if I am wearing workboots or Doc Martins, etc. There is no rubbing with a dress shoe, or a sneaker, or a docksider.
The quality of the console is amazingly nice. The sub is fantastic. So I cannot wear Timberlands when I drive the car, bfd. Go for it. |

I have a console in my car and sometimes wish I did not. I am 6-1" and have a 9.5 shoe. It gets in the way of heal-toe downshifting and just plain takes up leg room. I do like the looks of it but the gauges in it are pretty much worthless. A clock (big wow), a volt meter that is not accurate and a temp gauge. A friend of mine has my same year car with no console and it does offer me a lot more leg room. Like Larry, I am not able to wear work boots, just tennis shoes or dress shoes. But, if I had to buy another 914, I would probably buy one with a console again. So your choice. It's kind of like the hood badge. Boils down to personal choice!

I remove the console. Get a 75-76 Fuel gauge that has the temp gauge in it. The Volt meter is useless in a 914, It is a inacurate the way the its wired from the factory. and the Stereo has a clock.

Yeah you're right on the voltmeter. It sucked until I rewired it back to my terminal strip at the battery, which is the same point which my alternator regulates. Now the thing is OK.

Bill,
The stock center console is tapered on the drivers side to allow more room for those big-foot (HA!) guys - I'm only 5'4". Anyway, if you're getting a kit, the console doesn't need to be that deep. You could easily remove the back 9-12" and wouldn't miss it all all. You'd need to fab a new back piece, but the factory just used a piece of plywood painted black. Good luck & don't drive bare foot.
