I'm not an expert but the top photo in Conrad's post is definately a 1.8. I have a 1.8 and the air cleaner assembly includes the air flow meter which I believe is only on "L-Jet" engines (i.e., 1.8).

there were two different types for the 1.7, oil bath (shown above) and the later paper element style, both will work on a 1.7.

The 1.8 cleaner (shown above as well) is only for the 1.8

THey are not interchangeable

Correct. However, you can swap the 73 1.7 air cleaner (dry paper element) for the oil bath air cleaner which is what is pictured above. You might need the rubber intake boot (from the air cleaner to the throttle body) off the 73 car as well; I'm not really sure.

The oil-bath type filters just fine, though. It's a bit messier than the paper-element filter, but it works well.

1.7L oil bath air cleaner

I have a great looking oil bath air cleaner that I took off a parts car. 1971 car with about 80k wrecked in 1981 and in a barn ever since. I sold the heat exchangers and all the heater parts about a year ago. They were so clean you could see the date stamps on the heat exchangers and the "J" tubes. I didn't know there were date stamps on these parts because I never saw any in that condition. The air cleaner is in like condition.
