Where do I find the Case ID

I should already know this.....

I just got a new parts car and it has a 2.0. I'm fairly certain that it's a real 914 2.0 - it's got the 3 stud heads & D Jet but I want to check the case ID too.

Where do I find the Case ID on this motor. It's still in the car and will be coming out soon. I've looked everywhere but I don't see the case serial number anywhere.

Thanks in advance.....................Vern

For a 2.0L case, it's between the oil filler housing and the fan shroud just about directly below the bar for the cooling flaps that crosses the top of engine.

Thanks Alfred, I found it with the help of a mirror.

So, it's a GC case which my chart says that's a 2.0 for '75/76 cars. Are there any downfalls to the GC case vs the GA case?

My understanding is that the cases are identical - it's the heads that are slightly different for the '75-'76 2.0s which have holes for air injection that the earlier 2.0s did not.

My "914 Tech Tips" book says that the '75/76 cases were magnesium and will warp if overheated where as the earlier cases were aluminum and will not warp like the later years.

I'll take what I can get & for now I'll go with the GC case.

That's the first time I heard that. Here's what Tom Wilson's book says:

Alfred,

That's a very interesting article. I double checked my "914 Tech Tips" book and it's possible that they are referring to the "VO" engines being magnesium (although it doesn't say that).

I looked on the Tuna-Can web site and it states that all Type-4 cases are aluminum except a very rare case stamped "VO". It says that the VO case is for industrial use but not for the 914.

Interesting, the tech tips book says:

"1975-1976 914 owners, BEWARE! Warped cases have resulted in extremely hot running engines. If you engine runs hot, even after rebuilding, this is the problem. The only solution is to replace the case. We suggest using the earlier model aluminum cases instead. Cases are virtually interchangeable except for the engine serial number."

I'm satisfied....my case definitely looks aluminum. I learn something new every day............................Vern

Hmmn, chip a small bit off and hold it over a flame. Magnesium will burn very bright.
