How to ID a VW trans and find a solid front mount...

Looks like the front mount on the Speedster project has a torn rubber and it's the cause of the shudder and pop out....maybe.... of the trans in first and reverse.....

Anyone know where the ID # is on it? It's a four lug, 68-7x....or are they all the same?

Also, who makes solid mounts.....not like I care harsh it will be....

early mount left... '73 and later on the right

get both of them here

a solid mount will eventually break the nose of the tranny... what you need is something like this

back in my old type I days (20 yrs ago....ugh) we would use what we called "tranny straps" (probably same thing that ejm914 is recommending) that strapped the tranny to the mounting forks to prevent excessive movement (i think there were two--one by the bell housing, one at the front) they had arubber interface to the tranny so they weren't as harsh as solid mounts but did a nice job of keeping everything in place when abusing a type I tranny...

OK...it showed, I got all the bolts off, disconnected the shift linkage loosened the rear tranny bolts....the big 22mm ones and tipped the rear of the engine up.

I was able to pry the old crappy, torn MADE IN ******* INDIA mount out....can't seem to tip the trans down low enuff to get the front three studs into the front nose cone while clearing the two front studs that point down......

Any hints?
