Not that I know of, so far. Most people seem to feel that, if you're gonna cut up the car for the radiator, the small-block Chevy is the best bang for the buck. The 996 engines are very expensive for a good but not amazing amount of power. The SBC gives you a whole ton of power for significantly less $$, and the conversion has been done a zillion times already so the issues are all known.
The other popular water-cooled option (gaining popularity by the day, it seems!) is going Subaru. There are a handful of these running around, and more being built all the time. At least one even keeps the radiator in the engine bay, so no cutting of the front trunk is required. --DD

There must be a reason why it has not been done.....does it not fit? It would be nice to have a Porsche motor, it allow you to do PCA events. A 996 turbo motor would be interesting. There is one for sale on Ebay.

Power steering pump and lot of other stuff has to be pulled, the engine management system is a beyotch to get running in a different car...it talks to the other components and you need hacker programing to spoof it....
The same HP for 1/3 the price can be had with a SBChebby....

A 3.6L conversion is under progress near where I live. All new rear suspension because the engine won't fit between the trailing arms...
Cooling may be what I'm doing with my Audi conversion: twin front 986/996 radiators assemblies mounted where the headlight buckets were... Oh and if you're considering high hp Chevy, the proper tranny will bring the costs close to the Porsche drivetrain...
