Question Source for good rebuilt engines

I need a replacement engine for my 73 2.0. Does anyone know of a reliable source?

For stock-ish engines, I am told that Boston Engine Exchange is a reputable shop.

For a slightly more-advanced engine, McMark over at Altissimo/Original Customs will build you a "mild Raby motor".

I think FAT Performance in Orange CA can build you a stock or hotter motor.

Otto's in Venice will rebuild your motor.

Rich Bontempi at High Performance House in Redwood City will also rebuild your motor.

Brad Mayeur at 914 Limited in East Peoria IL can build you an engine or (probably) sell you a rebuilt one.
(No web site that I know of, phone = 309.694.1797)

Of the lot, the Boston Engine folks will probably be the least expensive. The engines will probably be "cookie-cutter" ones, a "one size fits all" stock type rebuild. They may or may not be willing to deal with the 2.0 914 heads. Doing so may bring the cost up significantly.

The others will be more willing to work with what you need. McMark probably will only have a couple of different engines he can build, but they should be top-notch. At least, if Raby's reputation is deserved, they should!

I'm not sure if FAT will do stockish rebuilds any more, but it won't hurt to ask them.

Otto and Rich will rebuild your engine. They're 914 specialists and experts--so you should expect to pay for that. Otto is also known for his personality, and some people have a hard time dealing with him. Rich is closer to you (if your listed location is correct), which can make life easier.

Dave Loop at 831-393-9995.

He is in Del Rey Oaks and specializes in Porsche motors.

Very competent and easy to work with.
