Unique Problem
I have a really big problem with my 71 914. Whenever I turn the steering wheel while driving the car makes a groaning sound which is extremely loud. I have looked underneath the fender to check for damage but I cannot find any. It happens when turning in both directions. Has anyone else experienced this? I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance, Mike

Is it only while the steering wheel is in motion, or simply any time the front wheels are not pointing straight ahead with the car moving?
If the former, I would check the steering column for problems. There is a bushing in there that fails and lets the wheel move around, and it may cause some noise as well. If the latter, I would wiggle the front wheels at the top to check the wheel bearing play. More than just a slight "click" feel is too much; a "clunk" feel means they need to be tightened or replaced. If they're making noise, replacement is probably in order. Noise when turning both ways would indicate both sides have problems. Note that the noise could also be coming from the rear wheel bearings, or the CV joints as well. --DD
