Urgent-where does this O-ring go?

Replacing the flywheel main seal and have engine separated from tranny and flywheel off the crank. No sign of any large O-ring that Pelican hosts recommends changing. Can someone (Dave?) please post the location of this O-ring (about 75mm diameter) in a diagram of the flywheel exploded from the crank. Is it located under the shims behind the flywheel seal?
In a rush to complete before sunday night.

It's been a while since I did the clutch on my car but IIRC, there is groove around the inside of the protusion on the flywheel that the O-ring (#6) fits into.

Look inside the flywheel right by where the #7 is pointing. Dig it out with a small screwdriver and carefully install the new one.

Thanks guys,
I found it after looking where you suggest. The tranny's back mated to the engine and now awaiting parts (tore the injection boot, muffler broke off 2 studs, must be drilled and tapped, leak at main seal was repaired.)

Now looking for boot (Pelican Host doesn't list it).
Found this on eBay (for Type 1 Bug enginepost 1975).
Question to all gurus will it be correct replacement for my 1974 1.8L 914 type 4 motor's F.I.??

Correct? Nope. It might fit, but I'm not sure. You may be able to fake something up out of PVC pipes and silicone hoses. Clamp it all together, of course... Or you may be able to repair yours in any "trailer-trash engineering" way you can. The boots, to my knowledge, have been NLA for a while.

how do you break muffler studs?

mine has nuts/bolts that connect it to the heat exchangers.
keep hearing about having to watch for this but if you snap the bolt the bolts off anyway. replaced them the the last time i put on a new muffler.

are you talking where the exchangers mount to the block, or the hanger that mount to the tranny?

Dave,
Very funny trailer trash repair suggestion. Really can't source a new one anywhere???? Luckily I don't need this 1.8L soon when the 2.0L is built.

So why doesn't the Beetle type one FI boot which on the surface looks pretty close isn't a better solution than that trailer trash PVC pipe extension crap you mentioned.

Ted,
The OEM studs on the muffler did break off so to use the bolts and forego the nuts (which wouldn't fit behind the flange) all I need to do is drill out the bolt and tap that hole to accept a new bolt.

I don't recall any studs on the mufflers... I always used nuts and bolts on the one stock and one stock-ish muffler. Where the muffler bolts onto the heat exchangers, that is, on a 70-74 914 specifically.

Sounds like you're talking about the exhaust studs, the ones that thread into the cylinder head. Or something I'm not at all familiar with...

Frankly, I haven't dealt with the Beetle boot. I wouldn't mind knowing how close it is to the actual part, but I don't have a 1.8 any more to compare, and I don't have the spare $$$ floating around to buy the Bug boot either. I would guess that it might be the wrong diameter, and have the wrong curves. But that's just a guess.

Dave, both the bug boot and 914 boot costs around $40 plus shipping. I may have to get one and see what the difference are.
